Major announcement: 2/8/07

After teaching for many years I will be taking a sabbatical from training and teaching.  My classes at the DFW Gunrange will end at the end of 02/07.  Take a look at my instructor's listing and try to find someone near you.  I don't know when/or if I will start back up again so good luck!

What is Jeet Kune Do/JKD?  The shortest/simplest answer is the art/philosophy developed by the late Bruce Lee.

Since the untimely death of Bruce Lee, jeet kune do has evolved into different camps/schools.  We have original jeet kune do (ojkd), which is normally classified as anything Bruce Lee taught while living in Seattle, Oakland and Los Angeles. We also have jeet kune do concepts (jkdc), which is normally classified as a Dan Inosanto lineage school that would encompass jun fan gung fu, Muay Thai, kali, silat and ground fighting. Within the jkdc schools you will also find Progressive Fighting Systems (PFS), headed by Paul Vunak. Another jeet kune do camp you will find is called functional jeet kune do (fjkd) and is headed by its President and founder, Matt Thornton. Functional jeet kune do distinguishes itself by the 3 ranges of fighting it implements into its program. They are the clinch, which is derived from Greco Roman wrestling, stand up (boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai), and ground (Brazilian jiu jitsu).  And the biggest difference among the other camps is the "aliveness" training and the great coaches and members that make up SBGI.  Feel free to visit the SBGI website where you will find out more about the type of training program and people that make up SBGI and why they have been a great influence on me through two of their former coaches/regioanl directors Adam and Rory Singer of the The HardCore Gym in Athens, GA.  http://www.straightblastgym.com/index.htm

So what do I teach? Marco Hernandez is the head instructor of The Crazy Chango Gym (formerly The Academy of Jeet Kune Do).  Ted Wong is my primary jeet kune do instructor and I teach original jeet kune do as taught from Bruce Lee to Ted Wong to myself. This is what makes up the majority of our stand up delivery system.  I have also incorporate mixed martial arts training as taught to me by Adam and Rory Singer. Adam and Rory own/run The HardCore Gym in Athens, GA.  One of their fellow training partners Forrest Griffin has won The Ultimate Fighter Light Heavyweight contest on: The Ultimate Fighter.  Our ground work comes from Brazilian jiu jitsu.  Myself and a few of my students train with Robert DeFranco, a Carlos Machado Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt.

We work on all 3 ranges (stand up, ground and clinch) for self defense, fun and fitness.  We basically train like a mixed martial arts school but we are not an mma school.  We are a self defense school and we do not have a competition team or compete in either mma or bjj tournaments.    Most of my adult students have full time jobs (as do I) and we just train as a hobby and for personal development.  But just because we do not compete do not think we don't make physical contact or train hard.  The three main requirements for my class are to train hard, have fun, and leave your ego/attitude at the door.

Am I certified by Sifu Ted Wong?  I receive quite a few emails asking me about this.  If you are looking for a paper trail and a paper tiger this is the wrong place to look.  I did receive a certificate of rank in jeet kune do directly from Ted Wong at a seminar in Tulsa, OK.  I did not ask him what it meant and he didn't tell me what it meant.  I was incredibly honored to have received that from him but as he clearly knows I don't care about certification.  I'm just a student who teaches and shares what he knows with the people that train with me.  I have no secrets, I hold nothing back and the better my students/training partners get the better I have to get or they will pass me up one day.  I recently found my certificate in a box in my garage and realized that Sifu Wong didn't even date the certificate he awarded me.  Oh well show's how much emphasizes I place on it.

What you will learn: footwork , kicking and punching techniques, clinch and ground work.  You will learn self defense for the street!  We train in jeet kune do that is both practical and functional.   Come learn jeet kune do/mma/vale tudo for fun and fitness in a safe and non-competitive environment!  This is a casual training environment.  We are about performance not image, certification, bowing and dead drill training.

We do not teach Wing Chung, chi sao or trapping because Ted Wong does NOT teach it.  The couple of times Sifu Wong has shown trapping at a seminar he makes it very clear that he is teaching it for "historical purposes only".

Requirements: no previous martial arts experience necessary, males and females are both welcome, you must be willing to work hard and learn.  No egos or attitudes allowed.  Most of my students are adults with no previous martial arts experience.
